The mission-driven home care agency will host the event from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine's Roland P. Sharp Alumni Conference Center. Visitors can expect free health and vision screenings, information from local organizations, door prizes, refreshments, and bingo games throughout the entire event. Remembrance ceremonies are being held nationwide, honoring those lost during the September 11, 2001 attacks and the first responders who bravely jumped into action to save lives. Some of those individuals paying homage to those heroes take the extra step to honor their sacrifice by climbing the equivalent of the World Trade Center's 110 stories. Director of Greenbrier County Emergency Management, Don Havens, underwent the memorial stair climb this morning, completing 110 floors on the Stairmaster wearing full fireman gear at Greenbrier Valley Fitness. #GreenbrierCounty #WOAY

Participants will learn how to build an affordable yet effective emergency kit, how to secure their finances before a disaster, and essential steps to take after an emergency happens. The event will feature a ceremony and candlelight vigil to honor and remember first responders and others lost during 9/11. The parade lineup begins at 6:00 pm at the Cecil H. Underwood Building. The EnCova Foundation of West Virginia awarded the grant to the WVSOM Foundation to help fund this year’s two-week wilderness medicine elective. The course runs August 24 through September 4, primarily at Greenbrier Youth Camp in Anthony, with additional training in the New River Gorge area and at Kanawha Falls. Third- and fourth-year medical students and resident physicians will train in emergency care, disaster response, search and rescue, rope access and patient stabilization. #GreenbrierCounty #WOAY

The shelter says a significant portion of its cats and kittens have been affected by the illness, and staff is working to provide treatment, separate sick animals when possible, and care for the shelter’s current population.  Officials say continuing to bring in additional cats right now could put both incoming animals and those already at the shelter at greater risk.  #GreenbrierCounty #WOAY

Volunteers searched by land and air, including Matt Whitt with Premier West Virginia Outdoors, who used his drone despite severe storms before joining the search on foot.  Four days later, Jasper was found alive in a neighbor's yard on the Monroe County side of Alderson. Construction is expected to begin later this summer.  The hotel originally opened in 1929 as the Maple Oaks Hotel and later became the King Coal Hotel, serving travelers along Route 60 for decades before being demolished in 2014.  The new museum will be part of the Society’s Hidden History of Western Greenbrier Project. #GreenbrierCounty #WOAY
