EnCova Foundation of West Virginia grants $25 million to West Virginia...

The EnCova Foundation of West Virginia awarded the grant to the WVSOM Foundation to help fund this year’s two-week wilderness medicine elective. The course runs August 24 through September 4, primarily at Greenbrier Youth Camp in Anthony, with additional training in the New River Gorge area and at Kanawha Falls. Third- and fourth-year medical students and resident physicians will train in emergency care, disaster response, search and rescue, rope access and patient stabilization. #GreenbrierCounty #WOAY

The shelter says a significant portion of its cats and kittens have been affected by the illness, and staff is working to provide treatment, separate sick animals when possible, and care for the shelter’s current population.  Officials say continuing to bring in additional cats right now could put both incoming animals and those already at the shelter at greater risk.  #GreenbrierCounty #WOAY

Missing puppy returns to family thanks to help from community volunteers

Volunteers searched by land and air, including Matt Whitt with Premier West Virginia Outdoors, who used his drone despite severe storms before joining the search on foot.  Four days later, Jasper was found alive in a neighbor's yard on the Monroe County side of Alderson. Although both of his front legs were broken, he recognized his family and tried to run to them.  #GreenbrierCounty #MonroeCounty #WOAY

King Coal Hotel property donated to become home of the future...

Construction is expected to begin later this summer.  The hotel originally opened in 1929 as the Maple Oaks Hotel and later became the King Coal Hotel, serving travelers along Route 60 for decades before being demolished in 2014.  The new museum will be part of the Society’s Hidden History of Western Greenbrier Project. #GreenbrierCounty #WOAY

Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department and local emergency agencies respond to major...

Greenbrier County Sheriff Bart Baker says the wreck happened around 6:00 a.m. near mile marker 174 on Interstate 64 westbound.  Upon arrival, crews discovered a trailer carrying containers of diesel fuel had broken loose from the truck and slid into the median.   Officials say 18 containers were damaged or overturned, spilling an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel.   State and county agencies were also called in to help contain the spill.   Despite those efforts, officials say some of the diesel has entered storm drains and made its way into Howard's Creek.   Crews are now working to stop the contamination from reaching the nearby Greenbrier River.   #GreenbrierCounty #WOAY

State Police investigate following officer involved shooting in Greenbrier County

Authorities report that on Monday, April 6, at 11:57 p.m., officers responded to a call reporting shots fired at Greenbrier West High School.  While patrolling the area, deputies heard more gunshots coming from a wooded area on the west side of campus and went to investigate.  Upon arrival, they saw a light moving through the woods and discovered a person in the area.  Authorities issued commands to the individual, who then reportedly fired a pistol at the deputies.  #GreenbrierCounty #WOAY
