Homer Hickam and members of the legendary Rocket Boys will gather at Pipestem Resort State Park this Friday, September 4, for the induction of Freida Riley into the West Virginia Hall of Fame. Riley was the teacher who inspired the young students whose story became the basis for Hickam’s book Rocket Boys and the film October Sky. The free, family-friendly event begins at noon and includes a writing workshop, a Q&A with the Rocket Boys, and a town hall celebrating teachers who have made a difference in their students’ lives. The “Wings of Wonder: WV Birds of Prey” program is coming to Pipestem Resort State Park on September 6 at 2:00 p.m.  The free, interactive program will feature six live bird ambassadors, including owls, falcons, a raven, hawk, and bald eagle Regis.  #SummersCounty #MercerCounty #WOAY

The structure was officially condemned due to serious health and safety issues. Officers discovered drug paraphernalia, including needles and aluminum foil coated in burnt drug residue around the building and inside a small shed on the property. The nonprofit has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. West Virginia's only mountain coaster is opening its gates for a special free ride night. Brush Creek Holl'r in Princeton is offering one free mountain coaster ride per person on Tuesday, July 28, from 5:00 until 11:00 p.m.  Riders must complete a waiver before participating, and height and age requirements apply to children.  #MercerCounty #WOAY

Officers called Mercer County SWAT for assistance due to Cain being potentially armed and barricaded inside the residence. SWAT arrived on scene and, shortly after receiving consent to enter the home, arrested Cain without further incident. #MercerCounty #WOAY

The community theater company will present "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at Pipestem Resort State Park's amphitheater July 17-18 at 6:00 p.m. and July 19 at 2:00 p.m. Additional performances will take place on Concord University's campus on July 24-25 at 6:00 p.m. and July 26 at 2:00 p.m.  The romantic comedy follows two couples who flee into the woods to escape disapproving parents, only to encounter magical fairies and plenty of unexpected chaos.  #MercerCounty #WOAY
