Rainelle, WV (WOAY) A major preservation project is coming to Rainelle.
The Greenbrier Historical Society says the former King Coal Hotel property has been donated as the future home of the Meadow River Valley Museum.
Construction is expected to begin later this summer.
The hotel originally opened in 1929 as the Maple Oaks Hotel and later became the King Coal Hotel, serving travelers along Route 60 for decades before being demolished in 2014.
The new museum will be part of the Society’s Hidden History of Western Greenbrier Project.
It will also include the historic MERILUCO building and the former Meadow River Lumber Company Sales Office.
Organizers say the campus will preserve the region’s coal, timber, railroad, and community history for future generations.
The Society is also seeking photographs, artifacts, and personal memories connected to the King Coal Hotel and western Greenbrier County.
