According to the Summers County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a call to Pipestem State Park, reporting a possibly intoxicated driver near the lookout tower. Sheriff Faris discovered 40 year old Samuel Walker passed out behind the wheel of the still running vehicle. The car was reportedly still in drive, and Walker was holding a knife while unconscious.  #SummersCounty #WOAY

Homer Hickam and members of the legendary Rocket Boys will gather at Pipestem Resort State Park this Friday, September 4, for the induction of Freida Riley into the West Virginia Hall of Fame. Riley was the teacher who inspired the young students whose story became the basis for Hickam’s book Rocket Boys and the film October Sky. The free, family-friendly event begins at noon and includes a writing workshop, a Q&A with the Rocket Boys, and a town hall celebrating teachers who have made a difference in their students’ lives. The “Wings of Wonder: WV Birds of Prey” program is coming to Pipestem Resort State Park on September 6 at 2:00 p.m.  The free, interactive program will feature six live bird ambassadors, including owls, falcons, a raven, hawk, and bald eagle Regis.  #SummersCounty #MercerCounty #WOAY

While Deputy Withrow was serving and protecting the citizens of Summers County, his family's home was destroyed by fire.   Now, local supporters are organizing a fundraiser to help the Withrow family recover and rebuild after the tragic loss.  #SummersCounty #WOAY

According to the Summers County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Withrow responded to a reported domestic disturbance in the Fox Addition area and made contact with 36 year old Cassondra Wood.  Authorities say further investigation revealed Wood was listed as a Fugitive from Justice and was wanted by law enforcement in Virginia in connection with felony narcotics-related charges. #SummersCounty #WOAY

A local school community is stepping up to help after a devastating fire. Logan Elementary School suffered a fire this past weekend, leaving classrooms with nearly nothing. Now, students and staff at Summers County Comprehensive High School are organizing a supply drive to help them rebuild.
