Lewisburg, WV (WOAY) The Greenbrier Humane Society is temporarily closing its cat intake as the shelter works to address an overwhelming population and an ongoing upper respiratory illness.
The shelter says a significant portion of its cats and kittens have been affected by the illness, and staff is working to provide treatment, separate sick animals when possible, and care for the shelter’s current population.
Officials say continuing to bring in additional cats right now could put both incoming animals and those already at the shelter at greater risk.
The humane society is asking the community for patience and, when it is safe to do so, asking people who find a cat or kitten to consider keeping the animal temporarily.
The shelter says that will allow its limited space and resources to focus on the animals already in its care.
Officials emphasize this is not a permanent closure.
They are working with veterinary and shelter medicine professionals to determine the best path forward and improve conditions for the cats.
If you already have an appointment to surrender a cat, the shelter says that appointment will still be honored.
However, if you’re able to care for the animal a little longer, officials say that would be a tremendous help.
The Greenbrier Humane Society says it will announce when cat intake can safely reopen.
