Deputies responded to a residence in the English area on June 7 after receiving a report of a sexual assault involving a 14-year-old girl. The McDowell County Commission says the hospital's future should be discussed openly and transparently, citing concerns about healthcare access, services, jobs, and long-term stability. Commissioners say there are still more questions than answers, but stress that Welch Community Hospital remains a critical healthcare resource for the region noting that Welch is the only hospital in McDowell County Delegate David Green says protecting the hospital has been his top priority since taking office in 2024.  According to Green, the hospital costs roughly $35 million a year to operate while generating only $15 to $17 million in revenue, resulting in annual losses of up to $20 million. #McDowellCounty #WOAY He says he initially opposed the idea of privatization but changed his view after learning more about the hospital's finances. 

Officials say a valve failure at a diversified energy compressor station near Eckman released about 100 gallons of used oil.   The leak has been stopped, and crews have contained the spill.   #McDowellCounty #WOAY

On Tuesday, May 26, the pantry will be in McDowell County at a new beginning at Rocket Boys Drive in War.  Then on Wednesday, May 27, the food bank moves to Raleigh County at the Linda K. Officials say the bear has gotten into several garbage bins over the past two nights, and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has been notified. As a precaution, residents are encouraged to avoid putting trash outside until pickup day and to remove potential food sources such as pet food, bird feeders, and drinks stored outdoors. #McDowellCounty #WOAY

According to McDowell County dispatch, crews were dispatched just after 2:00 am to the fire on Court Street at an unoccupied warehouse.  Fire crews from the city of Welch Fire Department, Kimball Volunteer Fire Department, Keystone Volunteer Fire Department, and Gary Volunteer Fire Department are still on scene fighting the fire at this time.  911 dispatchers are asking residents to avoid the area at this time.  We'll provide further details as developments are made. #McDowellCounty #WOAY

School officials report that all McDowell County Schools are currently under a lockdown at the direction of local 911 officials. School officials report this is a precautionary safety measure.  They report that students and staff are safe and following established safety procedures. During a lockdown, students cannot be released, and we ask that families please refrain from coming to school campuses. School officials state they will provide updates to families as more information becomes available.  McDowell County Schools thanks the community for its cooperation and support.
