Bluefield State University professor receives $370,000 in funding to research new cancer treatments

Bluefield, WV (WOAY) A Bluefield State University professor is receiving $370,000 to research new treatments for chemotherapy-resistant ovarian cancer.

Associate professor of biology and environmental science Dr. Yi Charlie Chen received the major award from the West Virginia IDEA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence.

His research will combine natural compounds, nanotechnology, and AI-designed peptides to develop more targeted ways to deliver potential cancer treatments.

The project will focus on two tea-derived compounds and explore ways to deliver them directly to cancer cells while limiting damage to healthy cells.

Chen says the project will also give students hands-on experience in cancer biology, nanotechnology, and other areas of biomedical research.
