West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection responds to oil spill in McDowell County

Eckman, WV (WOAY) State environmental officials are responding after an equipment failure caused a used oil spill in McDowell County.

Officials say a valve failure at a diversified energy compressor station near Eckman released about 100 gallons of used oil.

The leak has been stopped, and crews have contained the spill.

Most of the oil was captured on site, though a portion reached the Coalbank branch.

Environmental contractors have deployed containment booms and other recovery measures, and officials say no fish kill has been observed.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection says there are no reported impacts to public water systems, and municipal drinking water remains safe.
