WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): With the heavy rain and flooding going on across the area, there will be rivers overflowing and roads blocked off. With that in mind, here are some safety tips concerning the ongoing threat:
“Turn Around, Don’t Drown!” is the number one rule of thumb when dealing with flood waters. If the road is submerged, the water is very likely to be deeper than you think! Also, less than a foot of water can sweep away your car in a flash.
If your property is affected by flooding or your vehicle is stuck in the waters, make sure to seek higher ground immediately. Also, have supplies such as food, water, and devices on hand in case you need to move within your home.
Lastly, DO NOT wade into the flood waters. Debris such as glass, wood, and power lines can seriously injure you if you go into the waters. Be diligent when dealing with this flood event.
