Cool early, warmer later, showers throughout

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – Now that the cool front that produced the strong to severe storms that we saw yesterday in the northern parts of the area is gone, cool temperatures have taken over. Highs today will wind up in the 50s and lower 60s at all the reporting stations around the region.

With the cool start, dry air in place, and cool air filtering into the region from Canada, we can expect lows to drop into the 30s almost everywhere tonight. Patchy frost is likely in most areas along and north of I-64 and the West Virginia Turnpike from Beckley north to the Kanawha County line.

Frost Advisories are in effect there. In the highest elevation locations, some areas could drop to freezing, and in northwest Pocahontas County, a Freeze Warning is in effect. Be sure to take care of any tender vegetation along with animals that might be sensitive to the cold.

Tomorrow will be the type of day that we’ll see through most of the early part of the extended forecast. Highs will wind up in the lower 60s, and there will be a chance for afternoon and evening showers. We actually drop into the middle 50s for highs on Saturday, and the first half of the weekend will be around 15 degrees below normal on the high end of the scale.
Later in the forecast period, temperatures moderate, but we still see a chance for rain as a series of disturbances passes through the region. We’ll be watching one of these storm systems that moves in around the middle of next week for the possibility that it could trigger some stormy weather, but that’s a long way off.
