We’re seeing more storms today, as the weather pattern of the past few weeks continues. It’s the same story day after day, skies start partly cloudy to mostly sunny in the morning, which destabilizes the atmosphere, then the storms develop in the afternoon. With so much moisture in the atmosphere for the storms to work with, a quick inch plus of rainfall is possible during the storms. String a few days of those conditions together, and areas that see storms are vulnerable to flooding, especially since the soils become saturated with the constant rainfall. Add the occasional disturbance in the middle levels of the atmosphere into the mix, and some of the storms will be able to become severe, with damaging winds the main threat.
Over the next few days, the same pattern will still be in place, but there is a low-pressure center that will slowly drag a front through the region. The front really ups the rain chances this weekend, and once again, some of the storms will be on the strong side, especially on Sunday, as the front helps to enhance the storms. With so much moisture in place, rain totals will be high in some areas, especially in the southern coalfields. There, we’ll have to monitor the rivers, creeks, and streams carefully over the next few days.

Once the front exits the region on Tuesday, the weather will improve temporarily, with high pressure taking charge. While the rain chance will be lower, the temperatures will go up with highs in the mid to upper 80s. With the humidity, it will feel even warmer, so you want to take it easy if you have to be outside during the heat of the day. Rain chances go up a bit towards the end of the forecast.
