OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a pleasant, but cool, afternoon around the region, with temperatures in the 60s and 70s. By comparison, the average high in Beckley is 80 degrees, and the cooler than normal weather will last through the night as well. Skies will be clear and with an already cool start, lows will drop to the lower 50s, with some mid-to-upper 40s in the Greenbrier Valley and Pocahontas County.
Tomorrow will be another nice day as high pressure continues to be in control of the weather. After the cool start to the day, temperatures will rebound nicely and we’ll be near 80 degrees in most areas by the end of the day. Some of the usual warmer spots will wind up in the lower 80s. Of course, with the high overhead, there will be plenty of sunshine as well. As it moves off to the east on Tuesday evening, however, a flow out of the southwest will keep temperatures from falling to the same levels that we’ll see tonight. Instead, they’ll be a few degrees warmer; in the upper 50s.
Later this week, rain returns to the forecast as a front will move into the region from the northwest. We’ll see scattered showers and storms, with some of the storms possibly on the strong side.
Chances for rain are not that high, but there will be enough moisture around to produce some decent rain totals for anyone caught underneath the storms that pop up. Luckily, we’ll have had a chance to dry out a bit, so flooding shouldn’t be too much of a concern. For the first week of the high school football season on Friday, the chance for rain is also in the forecast, but the coverage and intensity of the rain will be even less than it is on Thursday.
For now, the weekend looks great, with highs in the lower to mid-80s and lows in the lower 60s, a trend which will last into early next week. I believe that we’ll stay dry as well, although the American GFS model is predicting some rain next Monday, a forecast that is not widely shared by the other atmospheric models.
