OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We continue to track showers and storms this evening around the area. The coverage is not that widespread, but the showers that are falling have heavy rain attached. Later tonight, patchy fog will develop – not only in places that see rain, but in other areas as well. Lows tonight will be in the lower 60s, the same level that we’ve seen over the past few days.

As we start the weekend, the rain chances will stay with us. Rain is likely tomorrow, and some of the showers will be heavy enough and fall in a short enough time span to potentially cause flooding issues. With a strong, continued flow from the Gulf, there is plenty of moisture for the storms to work with. The Flood Watch for the northern and western areas continues into Sunday morning.

The trigger mechanism for the storms will be a front that is pushing into the region from the northwest. Meanwhile, the old stationary front that has been hanging out to our south may be fading, but it is still close enough to give us a chance for storms. Some of these could be severe in the southern coalfields. Any severe storms that pop up could produce the stray damaging wind gust in addition to the chances for flooding.

With the thick cloud cover in place, temperatures will be a few degrees below normal, generally in the mid-70s. Lows tomorrow night will be a bit cooler due to the influence of the front. We’ll see the thermometer drop into the lower 60s.
The second half of the weekend will be a bit drier as the front from the northwest begins to push further to the south and fade away. The front doesn’t have any cool air behind it, as is typical of fronts in the summer. What it will do is clear our skies out a bit and allow more sun to shine through, especially later in the day. That will raise the temperatures slightly compared to Saturday. We’ll get a little closer to 80 degrees, but it will still be below normal. While it will be a little drier, it will not be dry. Rain chances will still be in the likely category at 60% during the day but will go down during the night to around 30%. Lows Sunday night will again be in the lower 60s.
