Weekend Outlook: Cooler temps, showers and storms

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It has been another hot and hazy day today around the region. There were showers and storms to our west in Kentucky, but they faded quickly after sunset. Overnight, more rain will make its way into the area from the Bluegrass State, and there will be some patchy fog and haze as well. Lows will again be in the mid-60s.

The first half of the weekend will finally see the rain arrive as a storm pushes to our north, dragging a cool front through the region. The front will trigger showers and storms as the day goes on; some of these will be on the strong-to-severe side.

As is often the case this time of the year, damaging winds are the main threat, but there are also flooding concerns as there is plenty of moisture for these storms to work with. The state has been highlighted for both severe weather and flash flooding chances from Saturday until Sunday.

Once the rain starts on Saturday, rain chances will continue through the rest of the day and into Saturday night and Sunday morning. Highs on Saturday will be in the lower 80s, cooler than they have been recently, thanks in no small part to the cloud cover. Lows Saturday night will be in the mid-60s again.

The second half of the weekend will start with good chances for rain, but rain chances will begin to drop as the day goes on in most areas as the front moves through. The front will pull up stationary just to the south of the region, and that will keep the forecast a wet one through the rest of the day. Highs on Sunday will be a shade cooler than they will be on Saturday because of both the passage of the front and the clouds and showers. As we start the next traditional work week on Monday, temperatures will be in the lower 60s.
