Warm weather continues, but changes are on the way

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a pleasant day around the region, as temperatures topped out in the mid-70s in most areas.

There were a few scattered showers around today, but these were even fewer and farther in between than what we saw on Monday. There could be a few showers that sneak into the area, but the chances for that are very small. Skies will clear overnight, and temperatures will be quite mild, generally around 60 degrees, thanks to a southwesterly breeze.

Tomorrow, we’ll see warm enough temperatures that record highs could be broken in several places. The records are 82 degrees in Beckley and at the Mercer County Airport (there is another set of records for a location in Bluefield where the record for tomorrow is 89 degrees). In Lewisburg, the record high is 81 degrees, and in White Sulphur Springs, the record is 86 degrees.
I think Beckley likely breaks its record high, and the other cities at least get close. Tomorrow night will be mild again, with lows in similar territory to what we’ll see tonight.
The first of two systems that will give us a chance for rain this week will approach on Thursday night and Friday morning.
This disturbance does not have much moisture to work with, so rainfall totals won’t be all that impressive and certainly not enough to alleviate the drought. Around a tenth of an inch in any one location would be quite a bit for this first system.
After a brief cooldown on Friday, temperatures will be very warm again as the weekend starts. But the weekend ahead is a tale of two different days weather-wise as a strong cold front comes through on Saturday night and Sunday.
With the passage of the front, temperatures will take a nosedive during the weekend. Highs in the mid-80s on Saturday will drop into the lower 60s on Sunday. The rainfall with this front will be higher than what we see on Thursday, although even this front is not as wet as it could be. Moisture from the Gulf will continue to be pushed to our west for the most part.
The start of the next traditional work week and the end of the extended forecast will be much cooler, with highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s. But the cooldown is a brief one, and temperatures just beyond the extended forecast are expected to remain above normal.
