Warm and wet weather this weekend and beyond

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We’ve seen another very warm day today around southern West Virginia, highs wound up in the 70s, more than 20 degrees ABOVE the normal.

We’ve also been tracking some showers and isolated storms that are moving through this evening. Some of the storms have featured gusty winds and possible pea-sized hail, and a Special Weather Statement was issued for one storm in the far northern part of the area. Most of what we’ve seen the rest of the evening has been more garden-variety stuff.

With the continued influence of the warm air, lows will only drop into the mid-50s, above the normal average highs this time of the year!

Tomorrow will be somewhat calmer than today. It will still be mild, with highs in the mid-70s. It won’t be quite warm enough to break the record for Beckley (that’s 75 degrees set way back in 1910!), however, it’s close. The chance for showers and storms will be smaller and more widely scattered. Overall, a nice way to end the traditional work week.
The weekend ahead will be active and warm again, with a possible record high on Saturday. The old record for the day is 74 degrees, set in 2009. We’re predicting a high of 75 degrees. The warm air is ahead of a cool front that will swing through on Saturday evening. The front will produce a line of storms, and some of these could be strong. The storms will produce gusty winds and heavy rain, which could cause the usual issues in poor drainage areas. Overall, damaging winds will be the main threat with any storms that become severe.
After the front moves through, the temperatures will fall, but will still be well above normal as we finish off the weekend. Highs will be in the mid-60s. We’ll keep a chance for rain on Sunday as well, but not as high as on Saturday, with any showers and storms that pop up also being less intense.
The traditional work week begins with continued mild temperatures and chances for showers and storms. We end the extended forecast with cold air finally returning to the area, with high temperatures on Thursday only topping out in the lower 50s. While that is much colder than what we’re seeing right now, it’s still above the normal.
