It has been a sunny, but cool, afternoon around the region today. Most areas were able to get into the lower 60s, but it was a bit of a struggle. Southwestern areas were closer to 70 degrees. The dry air, longer nights, and cool afternoon temperatures equal a cold night for everyone. Northern areas are likely to see some frost, and the National Weather Service has issued Frost Advisories for Raleigh, Summers, Greenbrier, Fayette ,and Nicholas Counties. There is also a Freeze Warning for Pocahontas County, all expiring at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. Be sure to take precautions if you have tender vegetation.

After the cold start, temperatures rebound nicely as the day goes on, and by the afternoon, we’ll be in the 60s almost everywhere, with the usual warmer spots pushing – and possibly getting to – 70 degrees. There will be plenty of sunshine as well. Overall, it’s a nice day for the Football Friday plans, but it will cool off to the point where a jacket or sweatshirt will be needed late in the game. By Saturday morning, we’re back in the mid-to-upper 40s.
The weekend looks like a mixed bag weather-wise around the region. Saturday will be very nice. Highs will wind up in the mid-70s. There will be a breeze on Saturday due to our placement ahead of the next front, especially later in the day. By Sunday, a strong cold front will make its way into the region. It will give us a good chance for rain, with heavy rain possible underneath the showers and storms. The chance for severe weather, while small, is there as well. The bulk of the severe weather should stay to our south and west, but we’ll be tracking it for you.

Next week, we’ll see more chances for rain and some ups and downs in the temperatures. Monday will be cool behind the first front, with the rain ending by late morning. Another front knocks the temperatures back down after a slight warmup on Tuesday. Another round of showers will be in the forecast by then as well.

When it’s all said and done, the atmospheric models that we look at are calling for more than 1″ of rain over a widespread area – great news as we try to erase the drought. By the end of the extended forecast, we’re calling for highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s.
