Tick-borne illnesses most common between Spring and Fall

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) Summer is the most active time of the year for ticks—and for the illnesses they spread through their bites. According to the West Virginia Office of Epidemiology and Prevention Services, Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease reported in West Virginia.

Infections can cause symptoms including fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, and rash.

The best way to prevent tick-borne illnesses is to avoid getting bitten by using tick repellent, thoroughly checking one’s body and pets, and properly removing ticks.

If you think you have a tick-borne infection, seek treatment promptly to prevent severe complications. Antibiotics are most effective when administered early in the course of an infection.
