The rain is gone, the heat is on

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a nice day around the area, with temperatures in the 80s almost everywhere outside of the high-elevation locations and Bluefield. Humidity levels are not that high, so it has actually felt pleasant outside today. There has been some haze from fires in Canada in the upper levels of the atmosphere, brought down by high pressure that stretches from the Midwest to the Canadian Prairies. That’s given us a bit of a haze today, a trend that will continue through Thursday. The haze and smoke have not gotten close enough to the ground to cause any concerns for the air quality. Tonight, skies will be clear, and temperatures will drop into the lower 60s, almost exactly to the normal.

Tomorrow will be a warmer day than today, and with a slight uptick in the humidity, it will become more oppressive to be outside, especially during the late morning and early afternoon hours.
Potential heat illness issues will come back into play as the heat index values will rise into the lower 90s in the higher elevations. That will be a trend that takes us through the rest of the traditional work week as well. Remember to take precautions if you have to be outside during the heat of the day and know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
The next chance for showers and storms will begin on Friday as another system approaches from the northwest. This next storm could produce strong to severe storms, but the main threat with the storms is the same as it was last weekend – heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding. Multiple disturbances associated with the parent system will push through the area due to the flow around the low-pressure center over eastern Canada. The rain chances will last through the rest of the extended forecast.
With the extra cloud cover and the rain, temperatures will drop a bit, with highs in the lower 80s. Lows will be in the middle 60s for most of the week ahead, with chances for patchy morning fog returning when the rain does.
