OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – What a great day it was around the region, as there was plenty of sunshine and pleasant temperatures. Highs wound up in the mid-to-upper-70s in most areas, with the higher elevation areas topping out in the upper 60s. Tonight, with dry air in place, temperatures are dropping quickly now that the sun has set. By tomorrow morning, we’ll wake up to readings in the lower-to-mid-50s. That seems cool; but is actually close to normal for the middle of September.
Tomorrow will be about as nice a day as we can expect in our area this time of the year. Sunny skies are in the forecast all day long, with only a few clouds around. Temperatures will wind up in the lower 80s, nearly 30 degrees above the morning lows, thanks once again to the dry air. If there is a downside to the nice weather, it’s the breeze that we’re expecting to develop. Winds will gust to as high as 25 mph at times.
The southerly flow will begin to transport more humid air into the region. That will keep the temperatures to falling quite as far as they will tonight. Lows will be around the 60-degree mark.
The high that is in control of our weather begins to move away as we go through the middle of the week. After one more sunny day on Wednesday, with a high in the mid-80s, a chance for showers and storms returns to the forecast beginning late Wednesday night into early Thursday as a front that is sitting over the Upper Midwest today finally comes into the region.
Of course, the extended time that it will take to get here means that the rain will be with us for a while once it finally arrives here. Rain chances are elevated later this week with the front stalling out close to our region; the forecast question now is how high they’ll be. In terms of rain chances, the European model is much wetter than the American GFS, but the GFS has more total rain over the next week. Due to the small chance for flooding, parts of the area have been highlighted by the Weather Prediction Center for possibilities for flooding from Thursday into Friday.
While we don’t think widespread flooding is likely, there could be some nuisance flooding such as ponding water on the roads and standing water in low-lying spots. One thing is for sure; rain chances will be persistent. Another thing that seems like a good bet, temperatures will remain above normal. Highs will be in the lower 80s and lows in the lower 60s.
