Strong winds today, chance for rain and snow tonight

Now that the strong storms are gone and the skies have cleared a bit, cold air has made its way into the region and temperatures are MUCH colder than they were at this time yesterday.

Generally, we’re in the 50s behind the low-pressure center that dragged a front through the area and produced numerous reports of large hail and damaging winds. This is combining with strong winds to make it feel even colder than the already cool readings might suggest.

There are still a few light showers around this afternoon, all stratiform precipitation. It won’t be enough to slow us down as we head out later this evening. Later tonight, as temperatures drop into the upper 30s and lower 40s around the area, some of this precipitation might change over to a mix of rain and snow or all snow, especially in the higher elevations.

Beyond today, the next few days should be fairly quiet, but another storm system will come into the region as we go into Easter Weekend. That might give us a chance for more stormy weather. How strong is still uncertain, but the Storm Prediction Center has placed the area in the 15% probability for severe storms, so we’ll have to track it closely.

One thing seems certain, however, and that is how much warmer it will be than it is today. Highs will be back in the 70s beginning on Friday and will stay there for the rest of the extended forecast.
