Stormy midweek weather, then a break

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We are seeing scattered showers and storms roll into the area from the southwest this evening. Some of the storms over other parts of West Virginia and Virginia, as well as parts of Kentucky, have been strong, and that could be the case for us as well, although I think the main concern for us will be heavy rain over saturated ground, causing some possible flooding. The chance for rain lasts through the rest of the night, and with the showers and the cloud cover, lows tonight will be mild, generally in the lower 60s.

Tomorrow, the chance for showers and storms continues, and some of the storms could be strong with heavy rain. Parts of the area – mainly in the southern and eastern areas – are in a marginal (Level 1 out of 4) risk of seeing amounts of rain that could lead to flash flooding. Other areas are in the slight (Level 2 out of 4) risk category.
Parts of the area are also under a marginal (Level 1 out of 5) risk for severe thunderstorms. If any of the storms do become severe, damaging winds will be the main threat, but small hail will also be possible.
Highs will still be close to the normal despite the cloud cover and will be in the mid-70s. The chance for rain lasts through the night and into the day on Thursday before ending during the afternoon and evening as the stationary front pushes away and a weak cool front finally clears the area. Lows tomorrow night will be in the mid-to-upper 50s.
Once the sun breaks out, most of the rest of the forecast should feature partly to mostly sunny skies. On Saturday, a weak disturbance will try to push into the region from the southwest, but it should generally get blocked from entering our area by high pressure over the central Great Lakes. Some of the showers to the north of the low could give us a chance for rain in the southern coalfields, but most areas should stay dry.
Meanwhile, a weak, moisture-starved frontal boundary will also push through, and while it doesn’t have any moisture to work with, it will drop our temperatures a bit. Highs will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s starting on Sunday and lasting through the end of the extended forecast. Lows will be in the upper 40s and lower 50s.
