OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We saw some strong storms this afternoon and evening. Some of the storms have produced small hail and gusty winds, but on the positive side gave us some additional rain, making the totals over the past few days over 1″ in many spots along and south of I-64.

Today’s showers and storms are associated with a front that will drop our temperatures tonight as it pushes through. Lows tomorrow morning will be in the lower 40s, a bit cooler than they were this morning.
Tomorrow, we’ll see a small chance for showers, mainly in the morning, but the big story will be the cool temperatures. Highs will only be in the lower to middle 50s in most areas, around 15 to 20 degrees below the normal. Once again, even though we’re in the middle of May, this front does have some cool air with it. By the time that we finish the day, temperatures will drop into the lower 40s in most areas, with some upper 30s, and patchy frost is possible in some of the higher elevation locations.
After the one cool day, temperatures will begin to climb as early as Friday afternoon, when we’ll see highs near 70 degrees. The readings only go up from there, and the weekend will feature highs in the upper 70s on Saturday and lower to middle 80s on Sunday. By Monday, we’ll be close to record highs around the area. We’re forecasting a high in Beckley on Monday of 87 degrees, and that would tie the record for the date, which had been set back in 1996. Temperatures will cool off slightly but remain above normal for the rest of the extended forecast.
As for rainfall, we will see several chances for rain over the next few days as the weather pattern continues. The weekend starts with rain chances in the afternoon as another system approaches from the northwest. Most of the rain will be scattered, and totals will, unfortunately, not be all that high, which is bad news due to the ongoing drought situation that we find ourselves in. More chances for rain end the forecast, and if the current model predictions hold up, heavy rain will fall just beyond the seven-day forecast.
