It was a great day today across Southern West Virginia, but we do have a small chance of rain tonight through Tuesday. Most people will stay dry and the rain will be very isolated and won’t last long over specific areas. Unfortunately, that’s not a great thing for our drought as it’s likely to get worse by next week’s update.

The main two models we use for forecasting rainfall totals also show quite the difference in rainfall totals over the next 7 days. The GFS, which is our American model, shows everyone staying below a quarter-inch through next Sunday with most of that rain falling on Sunday. Meanwhile, the European model shows some people approaching a half-inch of rain with a nice stripe of totals near and over a quarter-inch. Either way, this is nowhere near enough rain to help offset the worsening drought.

We are going to be watching a bigger system Saturday that will likely impact us Sunday or beyond that. I threw in a 30% chance of rain on Sunday for the potential that it comes in after midnight Sunday, but we will still have a rain shot on Sunday with this system. Widespread rain is still uncertain as model discrepancyvaries tremendously at the current time.
Looking at that full 7 day forecast, we will see mostly sunny days. Cooler temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday due to the small rain potential and more cloud cover, which will then lead to warmer days to close out our week as temperatures near 80.
