Severe weather update: strong storms are moving in

We’re seeing strong to severe storms move into the area this afternoon from the northwest.
The line is running roughly parallel to the viewing area The storms are producing rainfall rates of between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain per hour.
With the persistent rains over the area, flash flooding is a serious concern along the line of storms and has already produced Flash Flood Warnings just off to our northwest in an area stretching from Huntington to the Kanawha/Fayette County line.
And this is an area that saw flooding that produced mudslides along the West Virginia  Turnpike late last week.
The line will be in our area around the time of the afternoon commute and move through during the evening, finally exiting the area by around 10 p.m. In addition to the possible flooding rains, damaging winds are also a threat. The other usual threats that the National Weather Service tracks (large hail and tornadoes) are not significant threats with this line of storms.
After the storms are gone, skies will clear for a bit, but a small chance for showers will be in the forecast early tomorrow morning as well. These will not be severe, and skies will clear by the afternoon. That’s followed by nice weather for the rest of the week and through the holiday weekend. Temperatures will be cooler at first (tomorrow night, we’ll even see lows in the 50s for many areas!) but will be warm again by the end of the weekend.
