Severe Start; Snowy Finish

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): This morning started with a bang as severe thunderstorm warnings were issued across the western half of the viewing area. Wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour were possible, with many station observing winds in excess of 40 miles per hour. The storms weakened for a bit, but are now starting to gain some steam as they head for Virginia.

Pocahontas, Greenbrier, and Monroe counties may see some strong activity later this morning due to the sun giving our atmosphere more energy to feed off of. More storms with 60 mile per hour wind gusts and the possibility of an isolated tornado may develop. As a result, Greenbrier, Mercer, Monroe, Summers, and Tazewell counties are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 11 AM this morning. These storms are only the beginning of a rollercoaster weather day ahead. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the details:

After the storms move through this morning, temperatures will fall. Later this afternoon, the backend of the storm will bring snow into the region. Yes, you read that right. Snow starts to fall in the afternoon and will continue through tomorrow morning. This stuffs starts off steadily through the afternoon and evening before falling off and dissipating overnight. Still, our highest elevations will be between 3 and 5 inches while most of the area receive between 1 and 3 inches. Make sure you’ve got the winter gear handy because winter is not letting go just yet. Below is our Snow Forecast:

After a colder day for St. Patrick’s Day, temperatures start to slowly recover. Skies will remain cloudy through the week, though that cloud cover will fluctuate. There is a slight chance for rain through the second half of the week, though this chance is not agreed upon by all sources. By the weekend, weather will return to the spring-like stuff we have been enjoying since the beginning of the month. Here’s your 7-Day Forecast:
