OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We’ve been tracking showers and storms in the southern coalfields this evening. Some of the storms could be on the strong side, but flooding has been the main threat. As has been the case recently, there is plenty of moisture for these storms to work with, and we’ve seen decent amounts of rain. The showers and storms are tapering off late this evening and will end later tonight as we’ve lost the driving force of the daytime heating. By tomorrow morning, patchy fog could become an issue, especially in areas that see rain this evening. Lows will be in the mid-60s.

Tomorrow, we’ll do it all over again, as the trigger for today’s rain remains in place. It’s a stationary front that will sit just off to our south and serve as the focal point for rain for the next couple of days. Once again, heavy rain with the storms tomorrow could lead to flooding, and some of the storms could be on the strong side with an occasional strong wind gust or two.

Highs will also be in similar territory to where they are today, with most areas getting into the upper 70s and lower 80s.
The rest of the week will still be wet despite weak high pressure taking over for a couple of days. Rain is still in the forecast, but chances should be a bit lower and will almost exclusively be driven by the sun. However, even though the rain coverage will be slightly less, any storms that pop up will produce heavy rainfall.

Highs will be in the lower 80s. Another front approaches the area from the northwest later this week, and the rain chances go back into the likely category.

By the time that we’re done with this extended forecast, heavy rain is expected to fall and should go a long way towards erasing the drought everywhere. But we’ll need to be aware of the chance of flooding, especially in the northern areas.
