The showers have arrived, and now that they’re here, we can expect them to be around for a while.

They’re associated with a front that is pushing through the area from northwest to southeast slowly over the next 24 hours. There is plenty of moisture for the front to work with, and there will be good rain totals around the entire region by the time it’s all said and done. The heaviest totals will be in the northern and northwestern portions of the area, and this is great news since that area is in the most extreme drought.

Despite the dry conditions going into this round of rain, we’ll still have to deal with some ponding water on the roads and standing water in the usual low-lying and poor drainage areas. With the cloud cover and the showers around, temperatures will not fall off too much tonight, with lows in the mid to upper 50s.

Tomorrow will start with more showers as the front finally moves through the region. With the cool air behind the front beginning to influence our weather, temperatures will be about 10 degrees cooler than they were this afternoon, even after the sun breaks out later in the day. With the cold air in place, temperatures will really cool off by tomorrow night, with most areas falling into the upper 30s and the colder spots getting close to the freezing mark. Frost is likely, so take care if you have tender vegetation.
The cold air behind today’s front will stick around for a few days, with a gradual warmup as we go through the weekend. By the end of the forecast, highs will be in the lower 70s again. Lows will moderate a bit as well and will be in the lower to middle 40s. The weather will stay dry as high pressure will stay in charge of the weather, the warmup occurring as it slides off to the east of us, and the flow comes out of the south.
