OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – The nice weather continued today around southern West Virginia. There was plenty of sunshine and not very many clouds in the skies, thanks to high pressure parked over Tennessee and Kentucky. The high had brought down some cool air from the north, and we definitely felt it this morning, with lows in the 40s and 50s. As the high moves to the east, the flow will turn towards the southeast and then eventually to the southwest, leading to warmer temperatures over the next couple of days. Tonight’s low will be in the mid-50s on average, and tomorrow’s highs will be back in the 80s for the first time in a few days.

The dry weather lasts into Friday before the rain returns as a low will pass to our north and drag a frontal boundary into the area. This will be a cold front at first, with the storms associated with it possibly on the heavy side.

Over the following couple of days, the front will lift back to our north and become stationary, keeping us warm but also serving as the focal point for several rounds of rain. How much winds up falling will vary from place to place, but some of the areas that saw tremendous amounts of rain on Monday and early Tuesday will see more of the wet stuff. With that in mind, parts of the area (especially those parts) are in the “Slight” risk area (Level 2 out of 4) for rains that could lead to flash flooding Saturday and into Sunday.

By early next week, high pressure will really take over our weather, and the temperatures will soar into the mid- to upper-80s as we experience our first summer heat wave of the year.

With the high in control, chances for relief from the heat via a shower or storm are near zero. Our best hope is to see a storm that can break the “cap” in the atmosphere provided by the high-pressure center. Any storms that can do that will be intense.
