More rain tonight, changing to snow tomorrow

The showers have arrived around the area as a low-pressure center passes to our north. With that being the case, warm and moist air is being pulled into the region from the Gulf, meaning that the precipitation is starting as rain. Later tonight, we’ll even be tracking a line of fairly strong storms that could produce gusty winds.
As the night goes on and the temperatures cool off, the rain will change over to snow.
Most of the snow will be gone by tomorrow morning, but some banding is possible is the higher elevation areas.
The storm is a quick hitter, so the totals will not be as high as if the storm was going to linger, but with the banding setting up in the far northern parts of the area, we think that 1-3″ is possible in parts of Pocahontas, Greenbrier and Nicholas Counties, with lesser amounts along and west of the spine of the Appalachians. We’re not expecting much snow at all in the southern coalfields and in the southern portions of the Greenbrier Valley this time.
As the cold air invades the region, the usual temperature pattern is flipped around as well. Readings are expected to rise tonight and will mostly be in the lower 50s, and will fall off during the day tomorrow.
Friday’s high will be set early in the day (officially, we’ll top out in the middle 30s), and by the evening, we’ll drop into the lower 20s. In addition to the colder temperatures, there will be plenty of wind as well, especially in the eastern parts of the area.
The weekend ahead will be nice weather-wise, but will feature a mixed bag temperature-wise. Highs on Saturday will be in the lower 50s. A front will push through the area Saturday night, but it won’t have any moisture to work with, so temperatures will be quite a bit cooler on Sunday, topping out in the lower 40s. Both days will feature sunshine, with Saturday seeing more sun than Sunday.
The weather picks up as we go into the next traditional work week. A series of disturbances will push to our north, meaning that once again, most of the precipitation will fall as rain or as a mix of rain and snow. The first of these will give us some rain and snow late Monday and early Tuesday. The rest of the extended forecast also features chances for precipitation, including on Christmas Day. The total liquid from the rain and snow this week will be impressive in some areas.

And it should be enough to practically eliminate the drought of the past few months
