Impacting lives: Mercer County Corps kicks off Salvation Army Week

MERCER COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – Governor Patrick Morrisey officially proclaimed May 11-17 Salvation Army Week to recognize the organization’s statewide contributions.

Salvation Army of Mercer County is thrilled the governor is supporting their efforts and God’s work in the community.

They are delivering doughnuts to some of their local supporters, as their predecessors did during wartime.

The organization can change lives.

“We offer food pantry, financial assistance, rental assistance, as well as spiritual care,” said Corps Administrator Sgt. Melissa White.

According to White, she was once a recipient of the SAMC, growing up on Fifth Street Hill.

“My family was impoverished, a single mom raising four kids. The Salvation Army saw us — my mom went to apply for Angel Tree, invited us to their church, and character-building activities. They gave me the gifts and ability to believe in myself to accomplish much more,” the corps administrator said.

“I was the first person in the history of my family to even go to college,” said White. “To go on and get a master’s degree was unheard of. The Salvation Army changed the projection of my life.”
