Mount Hope, WV (WOAY) Mount Hope Mayor Michael Kessinger is providing an update on continuing efforts to develop approximately 66 vacant properties left behind by a federal floodplain buyout.
Kessinger says the city has faced financial challenges from the buyout for years.
According to a statement from the Mayor, the properties are subject to federal deed restrictions, with Fayette County holding the restricted deeds.
The buyout also reportedly eliminated about 102 water and sewer customers, while the city remained responsible for debt on the sewer system built to serve the area.
Kessinger says the city is now working with federal and state agencies to determine what can legally be done with the property.
The city continues to pursue a proposed RV park as part of a broader plan to promote recreational tourism and support downtown businesses.
Kessinger says the final size, design, and location could change to meet federal requirements.
The city is also exploring whether a stream restoration project could be incorporated into its recreational and economic development plans.
Kessinger says the city does not want to leave the properties vacant indefinitely and will continue working with Fayette County as well as state and federal partners to find a lawful and financially responsible solution.
