WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Yesterday’s heavy rainfall resulted in flooding issues across the area from the mountains of Nicholas and Pocahontas Counties to the Greenbrier Valley.
Some areas of the Greenbrier Valley exceeded 2″ of rainfall, and some spots even got more than 3″ in the Southern Coal Fields. The snowpack also had a significant amount of moisture before being melted, causing additional issues, especially in Nicholas County. These factors contributed to the mass of flooding reports across our region.
Some rainfall records were set as well, as Princeton, Bluestone Lake, and Beckley set daily records for January 31st. However, this was nothing like the June 2016 event, where 8 or more inches of rain had fallen.
The water will start receding after the rest of the snowpack melts on Sunday, but isolated ponding will stick around for longer periods. We will have the latest on road closures and reopenings as more information comes.
