Drought, Fire Risk Continue to Grow in Upcoming Pattern

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): An extended dry period will elevate the fire risk, trigger more leaf drop and allow the severe to extreme drought coverage to expand.

While Francine is making national headlines with a midweek western Gulf Coast landfall, a developing sprawling upper ridge in eastern Canada will deflect its moisture to the west of our region late this week.

In the meantime, a few deeper valleys will wake up to frost Tuesday morning. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon will be breezy, which will further elevate the fire risk. Expect a warming trend through Thursday, slight drop in temperatures Friday and Saturday before another warming trend ensues Sunday and Monday.

Davis, W.Va., dropped to 20 degrees this morning, establishing the Lower 48’s coldest spot for September 9. Davis could very well be the coldest spot again Tuesday morning with middle 20s!
