Drought Expanding Closer; Weather Remains Mostly Dry Through Weekend

Here is a look at the drought monitor that came out today (April 9, 2026). The Moderate Drought has expanded a little further north and now into West Virginia and now includes parts of McDowell County. Everywhere else in the yellow is currently in “abnormally dry,” which is not technically considered drought, but is getting there.

There is going to be a little chance of rain showers on Saturday; most people will stay dry, but the European model and the GFS do agree on a small chance of showers. This chance will mainly be in the Southern Coalfields into Monroe County.

There are hints that more rain could be possible from Monday through Wednesday of next week, but only the European model shows that as of yet. That is something we will continue to track to see if models decide to come into better agreement on more rain chances. Until that happens, though, we will continue to remain mostly dry across our whole region.

The European model shows us mainly picking up a few hundredths of an inch through the weekend, but with the secondary chance of rain, it shows numerous areas picking up close to a tenth of an inch. However, the GFS model is showing much lower rainfall totals, keeping everyone to a few hundredths of an inch through next week. Unfortunately, due to the drought currently unfolding, we will need much more rain than this to even make a dent in it. Expect the drought to continue to get a little worse before we get higher chances of rain.

Here is a look at the full 7-day forecast. Temperatures will continue to climb into next Thursday. Saturday’s temperatures are a little lower than the other days, as there could be more clouds and a small chance of rain in our region. Temperatures will quickly rebound, though, into the low 80’s as we head into next week, while remaining dry.
