WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Yesterday was a nice break from the rain, but that break is short-lived. Storms are not impacting the region yet, but a system is moving from the Midwest towards our region as I type. Stormy activity will peak in the late morning and afternoon, but rain will remain a possibility throughout the day. Activity will dissipate a bit overnight before storms return tomorrow. Heavy rain from the strongest storms remains a risk. Thankfully, this system is not as intense as the severe weather we faced last week.
The main concern for today is the risk for localized flash flooding. Rainfall will generally remain lighter than last week, but a few downpours are likely. The overall rainfall totals will not reach what we got during the worst of last week. Unfortunately, the flood risk remains due to saturated soils. The excess rainfall we received last week is keeping our area at risk for localized flooding over the next day or two. Along with heavy rain, a storm or two could become gusty. However, all of the severe weather should stay to our east. Storms will be much more typical for the summer season, which is good news. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the latest details:
After the cold front passes through today, storms will gradually dwindle this evening and overnight. Storms and showers return tomorrow and Saturday as multiple disturbances move through the region. Friday’s forecast is similar to today as storms remain broken. A low-end flooding risk remains due to isolated downpours. Intensity will remain lower, but activity will linger through the day. Areas that get poured on today will be at slightly more risk than others. Storms will remain on the weaker side, thankfully.
The forecast shifts a bit on Saturday as storms remain isolated. Due to the isolated nature of these storms, the risk factors change. Flooding becomes less likely this weekend, which is good news. Localized issues are still possible, but there will be less moisture for storms to pull from. On the other hand, there is a low-end chance for strong storms. There is a possibility for sunshine beforehand, which will increase the potential strength of storms later in the day. Storms will begin to clear up late at night and early Sunday morning, signaling a downturn in activity.
After the last of the storms leave, Sunday will be better. Mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 70s will end the weekend nicely. These nicer conditions continue on Monday and Tuesday, bringing us a slightly extended period of dry weather. At this point, we will take any break in the rain we can get. Humidity will be lower, allowing for comfortable conditions early next week. If you have any outdoor work or activities, try and wait until at least Sunday. Unfortunately, all things come to an end.
