Today is another hot day around the region, with almost everyone in the 90s – except for Bluefield. It feels warmer than that in all locations when you factor in the humidity as well. Some areas have seen the feels like temperature get to over the century mark, especially in parts of McDowell and Wyoming Counties.

Once again, we’ll need to be careful as we head out to our afternoon and evening plans. Extra fluids and frequent rest breaks are definitely good ideas this evening.
There have been a few showers that have popped up in the far northeastern part of the area. Some of these could be on the strong side if they are able to break through the cap in the atmosphere provided by the high-pressure center that has been parked over the region. The Storm Prediction Center has parts of the state in the “Marginal” risk category for severe storms over the next few days – provided we get some storms.
Tomorrow, we’ll see a repeat of today with near record highs (tomorrow’s record high in Beckley is 91 degrees set in 1914). If we get to 90 degrees for a third consecutive day in Beckley, it will officially be classified as a heat wave. Regardless of what it’s called, it will be dangerously hot again and Heat Advisories will continue to be in effect through 8 p.m.

Later in the extended forecast, it will cool off a little bit as the cloud cover and rain chances go up. It’s nothing like a front pushing through the area; it’s just a breakdown in the persistent heat dome. The weather later in the extended forecast will be similar to a more typical summertime pattern.
