Chilly again tonight, then a coastal low brings rain chances

It is a sunny, but cool, afternoon around the region as temperatures have wound up in the 60s area-wide, with slightly warmer readings outside of the southern coalfields and high elevation locations.
Everyone is below the normal high for today, which in Beckley is 66 degrees. With the cool start to the evening, plenty of dry air in place, and shorter days, tonight will be another cold night around the region, with some areas in Pocahontas County getting close to the freezing mark. In other parts of the Greenbrier Valley, as well as in higher elevation portions of Fayette and Raleigh County, we’ll drop into the mid-30s. Nicholas County will also see chilly temperatures. For this reason, Pocahontas County has a Freeze Warning in effect until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. The other areas are under a Frost Advisory, expiring at the same time.
Tomorrow will be another cool day around the region; in fact, it will be a degree or so cooler than it will wind up being today. Highs will be in the lower 60s again. At least there will be sunshine! For tomorrow’s Fabulous Football Friday games, we’ll start off with ice enough weather, but as the game goes on, temperatures will drop off, and by the end of the game, a jacket, sweatshirt, or blanket will be a handy accessory. Temperatures at the end of the games will be in the lower to middle 50s. Lows tomorrow night will be cool again, but not quite as cool as they will be tonight.
The weekend starts off nicely, with highs on the rise. Saturday will be a shade warmer again, as highs will be in the mid- to upper-60s. Sunday, the slight warming trend continues, but the big story in the weather will be a developing coastal low-pressure center. The low, the first Nor’easter of the season, will develop off the Virginia coast and move to the north-northeast, all while strengthening. As it moves along the shore, it will get close enough to us that we’ll see a chance for showers. That will be in the eastern parts of the area, particularly for the Greenbrier Valley.
Rain totals will not be too bad, but not enough to alleviate the continuing drought.
Next week, there will be some ups and downs in the temperatures, but we’ll still be below the seasonal normals. Another system is slated to come into the region late next week, but rain chances with it are small once again. The latest drought monitor is still looking bleak for us around southern West Virginia, but there is a delay in reporting the rain, as the information used in the report was gathered on Monday, before the rains really started. In the end, however, more rain is needed around the area.
