Beckley, WV (WOAY) – AWAY, formerly the Women’s Resource Center, hosted free screenings of the documentary “Roll Red Roll” Wednesday at WVU Tech in Beckley as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The film examines the 2012 Steubenville, Ohio case in which a teenage girl was sexually assaulted at a party and the assault was posted and shared across social media.
AWAY Executive Director Regina Thomas said the screenings are designed to give the community a starting point for discussing consent and bystander intervention.
“A lot of people may be scared, like, what do I do if I see this happening? How do I report it or do I talk to? So it really helps us open up the conversation and because it’s a hard topic to talk about. So we’re just trying to ease that a little bit and make it a little bit smoother for people to bring it up and talk about it,” Thomas said.
AWAY provides free, confidential services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence across four counties in southern West Virginia. The screenings were free and open to the public.
