Active weather continues for southern West Virginia

There are plenty of clouds around the region this afternoon, but despite the cloud cover, temperatures are mild for the season and are much warmer than they were 24 hours ago, mainly in areas that were picking up rain.
The difference in temperatures from south to north was pretty dramatic yesterday, but is nowhere near as big today. Most areas are in the lower to middle 50s. Tonight, we’ll see the return of patchy fog. It will be dense in spots like it was last night, and it will be more widespread as almost the entire area has picked up rain.
Lows will be in the lower to middle 40s.
Tomorrow will be a similar story to today, with patchy fog in the morning lifting but clouds sticking around. Even the temperatures will be in the same neighborhood as today, generally in the mid to upper 50s. As the day goes on, a warm front will overspread the state and will give us a chance for showers. Behind the front, the lows will be in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees, and highs on Friday will be at the highest level that we’ll see during the entire extended forecast, topping out in the lower 60s in most areas.
As Friday goes on, showers will develop along the front, and heavy rain is possible along with some isolated thunderstorms.
Unfortunately, that means rain is likely for our football Friday playoff games. Chances for thunder should be small enough to keep the games moving rather than seeing stoppages due to thunder and lightning. The rain chances last into Saturday morning before tapering off. The second half of the weekend should be dry and mild.
As we go through Thanksgiving week, another pair of storms will impact our Thanksgiving travel plans. The first arrives on Monday night and Tuesday, and gives us good rain chances. This system is quickly followed by another that will impact our Wednesday travel plans.
Then another storm on Black Friday means more chances for rain and, with the addition of some cooler air from Canada, snow in the northern portion of the state and in the higher elevations of our area.
If there is a good side to all this precipitation, it’s that it will help to alleviate the drought that we’ve seen for much of the past few months.
Expect improvement in the Drought Monitor over the next couple of weeks.
