Active weather continues around the area

It is a fairly standard summer afternoon around southern West Virginia, with temperatures this afternoon near or just above the normal for the middle of July.

The showers that are showing up on the live Doppler Radar are scattered in nature, and mainly around the southern coalfields and Greenbrier Valley.

Later this evening, there will be a few more showers and storms around to impact our evening plans, but the number of storms is not what we’ve seen for much of the past week. After the sun goes down, we’ll see the rain taper off and patchy fog will again become the main travel concern for the late evening and overnight commute.

Tomorrow and beyond, the pattern becomes more active again. Wednesday, the culprit is a weak middle level system that will push towards the region. This will enhance the usual afternoon storms and could lead to some possible strong storms, with damaging winds representing the main threat, along with the persistent water threat. The strongest storms will remain to our north, however.

By Thursday, a front approaches the area from the northwest and it will increase our rain chances into the likely category. Some of the storms could again be on the strong side, with damaging winds once again representing the main threat.

The weekend ahead features more chances for showers and storms as another front comes through the region.   The later days in the forecast do call for a bit of a drying trend as more typical summer weather takes hold. We’ll see more of the daytime and evening storms giving way to patchy late fog, similar to what we’re seeing today.
