The clouds are stubbornly hanging around this afternoon and there is some fog and mist as well. Overall, not a very nice day weather-wise – unfortunate for our Memorial Day plans.

Where there are clouds, temperatures are stuck in the 50s. But where the sun has broken out, it’s in the 60s and 70s! Charleston and Beckley are only 50 miles apart but there is an 18-degree spread in the temperatures between the two cities!

Any rain that is falling around the area, is very light, but that will be changing over the next couple of days. A disturbance in the middle levels of the atmosphere comes through Tuesday and brings rain with it. Some of the rain will be heavy at times, but with it being relatively dry the last few days and the now fully green vegetation being able to absorb the rain that we’re expecting, we should be able to avoid flooding everywhere except for the usual low-lying spots along with some ponding on the roads.

The middle of the extended forecast looks similar to what we saw last week, as a pair of low-pressure centers spin to the north and east of the area. These lows will keep the weather unstable for the rest of the week, but with a warm front overspreading the state, at least temperatures will get back to close to the normal. A secondary front comes through by Friday but won’t have much moisture to work with. Still, flooding could be a concern in some spots if we see enough moisture tomorrow to saturate the soils. The end of the forecast should be dry and warmer as the upper air pattern will change to a warmer one for our area.
