A wet and mild week ahead

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We’re expecting multiple rounds of rain and mild temperatures this week around southern West Virginia. Highs will be around 20 degrees above the normal for most of the extended forecast period. Lows will be closer to the average highs.

Welcome to the final days of March. That’s what the calendar says at least, but like we’ve seen much of the last couple of weeks, temperatures are closer to where they would normally be in late April.

To complete the mid-Spring feel to the weather, we saw some showers and heard a few rumbles of thunder this morning. Scattered showers will also be in the forecast for much of this week. The reason? A series of fronts is sitting just off to the north of our area, held in check by strong high pressure over the western Atlantic. But these lows are close enough to trigger some showers as they pull up warm, moist air from the Gulf. Add in some sunshine during the day, and the atmosphere is just unstable enough to produce showers and a few thunderstorms.

By this weekend, the high will push eastward, and the cold frontal side of one of these lows that are passing to our north will finally swing through. Unfortunately, that will be on Easter Sunday. Indoor plans for Easter gatherings will be a necessary backup due to a good chance of rain.

Once the cool front finally swings through, temperatures will finally fall off, but only to the normal for early April.
