A smaller severe threat today

There are showers and storms around the area this afternoon as the active weather pattern over southern West Virginia continues.

There will be more showers and storms around tonight, but while the chance for severe weather is smaller than yesterday it is not zero. If there is any severe weather the threats are the same as usual, damaging winds followed by flooding.

The atmospheric models that we look at have different solutions as to how much rain is expected, but overall totals should not be that high. Still any rain could be problematic given how saturated the soils are.

The rain comes in rounds over the next couple of days as a pair of low-pressure centers continue to impact our weather. Eventually, the one off the Atlantic Coast becomes the dominant one of the two and moves away by late week.

But in the wake of the low, cool air will invade the region and stick around through the entire Memorial Day weekend. The high on Friday will be in the same range as the low only a couple of days ago! Most areas will not even be able to get to 60 degrees on Friday, and the weekend will feature below normal temperatures. That trend continues into next week and we’ll add in chances for showers as another series of low-pressure centers comes through the region. For now, it looks like we’ll avoid any severe weather.
