A few showers around today, but more is needed

There are plenty of clouds around the area this afternoon, but not that many showers. The showers that are falling are mainly confined to the Greenbrier Valley and Southern Coalfields. It’s actually loosely associated with Tropical Storm Imelda, as moisture from the southwest Atlantic gets pulled into the area by high pressure to our northwest.
With the cloud cover, lows tonight will remain fairly mild and will fall more slowly than if we had clearer skies. We’ll wind up in the upper 50s in most areas, with some lower 60s in other areas that see more clouds. Patchy fog is once again a possibility, especially in areas that see rain.
Tomorrow, the showers associated with Imelda and the storms’ interaction with high pressure will continue. The rain is expected to drive further north than what we’re seeing this afternoon, and most areas will pick up some rain.
Totals will be light, generally under half an inch, but an isolated spot or two will receive more.
Despite the cloud cover, highs tomorrow will be slightly warmer than normal, in the lower to middle 70s. Tomorrow night, it will clear out after some evening clouds, and lows will respond accordingly, dropping into the lower to middle 50s. How cool it gets will be determined by how soon we clear out.
By the middle of the week, Imelda begins the turn to the east-northeast while the high-pressure center to our northwest will remain in charge. Sunny to mostly skies will dominate, and while a weak trough will push through the region, dry weather will continue. While it will be very nice to be outside, we do need some rain. Despite showers that fell throughout the region on Saturday, with Flood Advisories in the southern parts of the area on Saturday, the rain that we picked up will not be enough to alleviate the drought that many areas are in, especially in the northern areas. The Drought Monitor from last Thursday still had far northern areas of Nicholas and Pocahontas Counties in extreme drought, while most of the rest of the area was in at least moderate drought conditions.
It will likely be a similar story later this week as well.
Temperatures will stay fairly steady throughout the week; highs will be in the 70s throughout the rest of the extended forecast. Just beyond the extended forecast, there will be another chance for rain, but temperatures will stay above normal, according to the Climate Prediction Center.
