It is another nice afternoon around most of the area this evening. We are tracking some showers and storms in eastern Kentucky and southwest Virginia and some of those will push into Tazewell County later this evening.
Everyone else should stay dry, and any rain that does fall will have to moisten up some dry air at the surface to make it to the ground. The showers and storms should fade later tonight, and temperatures will fall into the lower to middle 50s by tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow, another round of showers and storms is in the forecast as a disturbance in the middle levels of the atmosphere pushes through the region. There is enough moisture to work with and we’re expecting enough sunshine to trigger some showers and storms.
There could be some decent rainfall with the storms that pop up, but because most of the last week has been dry (except the scattered storms on Sunday), water issues should be confined to the usual problems that come with heavy rain in short time periods. Highs tomorrow with the cloud cover will be a little cooler than today, mostly in the lower to middle 70s. Tomorrow night, the showers will end, and the skies will become mostly clear. Lows will again be in the mid-50s.
A much better chance for rain is in the forecast beginning on Thursday as a vigorous front pushes into the region.
The chance for rain is very high, and there is plenty of moisture for the storms to work with. The Weather Prediction Center is putting parts of the area at a 5% or greater risk for flooding rainfall from Thursday morning until Friday morning. I think the main threat is the more typical standing water in low-lying spots and ponding water on the roads. As for the chance for severe storms, the Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire area (in fact, almost the entire state) in the Marginal Risk category for severe storms, the lowest level. Any storms that do become severe will have strong winds attached, in addition to the heavy rain.
The storms will continue into Friday morning before ending. For now, it looks like the weather should be good for our Fabulous Football Friday games, but we’ll continue to track it for you. Temperature-wise, highs on both days should be in the mid to upper 70s, with lows near 60 degrees.
The weekend ahead offers a mixed bag, with more showers and a few storms on Saturday as another front swings through the area. With less moisture to work with, chances for rain will be lower than they will be on Thursday and early Friday. Temperatures will also be lower, but not by much, generally in the lower 70s for highs and in the upper 40s and lower 50s for the lows. A slight warmup ends the extended forecast.
