OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – Hot weather continued to be the big story around the area today, as highs will wind up in the mid-80s in most areas. It’s not warm enough to set any records, at least in Beckley, but it’s still more than 10 degrees above the normal. Similar to last night, there could be a few scattered showers and storms around, but these will be few and far between. Lows tonight will be in the lower 60s again.

Tomorrow will be an active day around the area, as a front comes slowly into the area from the northwest. The front will bring showers and storms, some of which will be strong to severe.

If any of the storms do become severe, they’ll have damaging winds and possibly large hail, although the chance for hail is small. The Storm Prediction Center has continued the Marginal Risk for our entire area for that possibility.

The other concern is for a heavy amount of rain in a short time, which could cause ponding water on the roads and standing water in low-lying spots. There could also be some runoff issues in the towns and cities. The chance for flash flooding is in the forecast on Thursday as well, but the region that could see the flooding moves to the southeast slightly and is mainly confined to the southern and southeastern areas.

Behind the front, temperatures will be falling off, but only to near normal levels and only for a couple of days before rising again to nearly 80 degrees for the highs. The chance for rain stays with us throughout the rest of the extended forecast. By the time it’s all said and done, most areas will pick up at least 1″ of needed rainfall, and many others will see much more. While that’s not great news for the holiday weekend plans, it is good news for our drought situation, and there should be a few breaks in the rain to allow for some outdoor plans, as long as an indoor alternative is present as well.
