OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a cloudy and dreary afternoon around southern West Virginia as the cold air behind the front that passed through the region yesterday was pulled into the region. Temperatures this afternoon are quite a bit colder than they were yesterday.

With the cold start and some clearing skies later on, we’re expecting to get quite cold tonight. Some of the high elevation areas will see patchy frost, and everyone will see temperatures in the 30s and 40s, so be sure to take care of the tender vegetation and the pets.

Tomorrow, temperatures will rebound nicely after the cold start, with highs in the mid-to upper 60s. That’s not quite back to normal, but it is at least closer than we were today. Despite the fact that it will be warmer, the clouds will still hang around, with partly sunny skies. Tomorrow night, we’ll see mostly cloudy skies and lows around 50 degrees, which is about where we should be.
The real warmup begins this weekend. Highs on Saturday will be around 80 degrees as a warm front will push through the state. Temperatures will continue to rise until they’re at or above record highs next Monday. The record high for Beckley next Monday is 87 degrees, set back in 1996, and we expect the high to reach 88 degrees that day.
Saturday’s warm front makes it far enough north to keep most of the showers away from our area, but a few might sneak far enough south to give us some rain as well.

Much better chances for showers and storms are in the forecast by the middle of next week. It will be an almost summerlike feel to the weather, with highs closer to where they would be in July and afternoon showers and storms each day.

The multiple chances for showers and storms are a good thing, because according to the latest drought monitor that was released today, the drought has expanded a little, and a small portion of Tazewell County is now in Extreme Drought.
