OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – A few flurries are flying in mainly northern parts of the area this evening, but the number and intensity of snow showers are much less than they were last night. Still, a small chance of snow is in the forecast for tonight and early tomorrow morning. Despite that, the big story tonight continues to be the cold temperatures. Lows tonight will be around the 10-degree mark.

And with some wind, it will feel like it’s at or below zero almost everywhere. Once again, we have cold weather alerts in effect through tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow, the skies will clear a bit during the afternoon, but it will be another cold day. I expect some sunshine to break out, but highs will be in the lower 20s, similar to where they were today. The decent weather lasts into Friday before clouds and snow return with a storm moving to the south of the area. This storm will give us some accumulations, generally 3-5 inches from Fayette County south to the southern coalfields, with 5-8 inches there, with locally higher totals.
What happens after the storm moves over the Atlantic continues to cause headaches for the forecasters. Does it track closer to the coast, as the GFS is predicting?

Alternatively, does it stay farther out to sea, as the European is predicting?

One thing is for sure: the storm is expected to become quite strong as it moves north-northeast.
Another thing that seems certain is the cold air behind the low. Highs will be in the mid-teens on both weekend days, and lows will once again be near zero. Next week, we’ll begin to finally warm up, with highs getting over the freezing mark for the first time in a bit. Another storm system ends off the extended forecast, but the timing is uncertain regarding when it will arrive. Some of the precipitation with this final system will fall as rain.
