Morgantown, WV (WOAY) New research from West Virginia University suggests supporting women entrepreneurs could help strengthen rural economies.
The study examined data from more than 1,600 rural counties across the country and found that self-employed women are linked to growth in local wage-and-salary employment.
Researchers say access to child care, financial institutions, education, and community support plays a critical role in helping women start and grow businesses in rural areas.
The study also found that improved child care access may allow more women in remote communities to pursue entrepreneurship and become business owners.
Researchers hope the findings will help local leaders create more inclusive support systems and encourage economic growth through entrepreneurship.
